Romans 1 (1-20)
New International Version (NIV)
1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures3 regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life[a] was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power[b] by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from[c] faith for his name’s sake. 6 And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul’s Longing to Visit Rome
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. 9 God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you.
11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong—12 that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters,[d] that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.
14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish.15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,[e] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”[f]
God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity
18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

CÁC ĐIỂM NGỮ PHÁP CẦN NGHIÊN CỨU:
1. Passive voice.
Formation: To be + past participle (quá khứ phân từ)
1. your faith is being reported all over the world (v 8) câu này động từ được dùng ở thì Present Continuous thể thụ động [có thể nói gọn là thì hiện tại tiếp diễn thể thụ động (Present Continuous Passive Tense)]
Như vậy câu 8 dịch sát nghĩa: Hiện nay đức tin của anh em đang được lan truyền khắp cả thế giới.
Tương tự câu 18: The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, động từ được dùng như ở câu 8 và được dịch sát nghĩa: Hiện nay cơn thạnh nộ của Đức Chúa Trời đang được bày tỏ từ thiên đàng chống nghịch lại tất cả mọi sự không tin kính và độc ác của con người.
Lưu ý thể thụ động chỉ được dùng với ngoại động từ (transitive verb) tức là động từ có một túc từ trực tiếp (direct object) mới đủ nghĩa.
– Một câu chủ động có thể chuyển đổi thành câu thụ động và ngược lại.
– Examples:
Active: Somebody is cleaning the room at the moment.
Cấu trúc của thì hiện tại tiếp diễn : am/ is/ are + V-ing
Passive: The room is being cleaned at the moment (by someone). By someone có thể bỏ đi.
Cấu trúc của thì hiện tại tiếp diễn thụ động: am/ is/ are +being + past participle
2. Để sáng tỏ điểm ngữ pháp này chúng ta khảo sát thêm một số câu Kinh Thánh khác:
1. Acts 25:4
“Festus answered, “Paul is being held at Caesarea, and I myself am going there soon.” Câu này dùng thì Present Continuous Passive. Khi Festus trả lời thì Phao-lô đang bị giam giữ ở Caesarea.Câu này được dịch: Festus trả lời: Phao-lô hiện đang bị giam cầm ở Caesarea, và chính tôi sẽ đến đó sớm. Chú ý: “I myself am going there soon” là thì hiện tại tiếp diễn được dùng để diễn tả một tương lai gần.
2. Romans 12:11
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
Câu này dùng Imperative mood (mệnh lệnh cách) ở thì Present Continuous. Câu này dùng cách đảo ngữ (inversion) để nhấn mạnh khi đặt Never ở đầu câu.
Câu này viết lại theo cách thông thường: While serving the Lord, never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor. Câu này có ý nhấn mạnh, được dịch là: Trong khi đang hầu việc Chúa, đừng bao giờ thiếu nhiệt tâm, nhưng phải duy trì tâm linh nóng cháy của anh em.
Đến đây có lẽ các bạn có thể hiểu rõ các câu Kinh thánh dùng ở thì Present continuous passive sau đây và các bạn có thể dịch sát nghĩa?
* Ephesians 2: 22
And in him you are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
* Psalm 11:3
When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?
* Acts 4:9
If we are being called to account today for an act kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed.
Present Continuous được dùng khi nào?
Examples: Ann is in her car. She is on her way to work.
She is driving to work.
Am/is/are + V-ing là thì Present continuous
Hình thức thụ động (passive) của Present continuous?
Examples: Active: am/is/are + V-ing
Somebody is cleaning the room at the moment.
Passive: am/is/are + being + past participle
The room is being cleaned at the moment ( by somebody )
3. The righteous will live by faith (v 17).
a/ righteous là một tính từ, nhưng nếu trước nó có THE (definite article) thì tinh từ righteous trở thành một danh từ dùng để chỉ cho một hạng/ lớp người.
Các bạn chắc chắn sẽ hiểu chính xác các câu KT sau đây dùng tính từ như một danh từ như đã giải thích ở trên.
* Proverbs 22:22
Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court (poor and needy are adjectives )
*Act 28:9
When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured. ( sick is an adjective).
* Psalm 147:6
The Lord sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground.(humble and wicked are adjectives).
b/ all over the world là một thành ngữ (expressions) có nghĩa: trên khắp thế giới.
Trong Acts 17:6 cũng dùng thành ngữ này:
These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here.
