God’s Thoughts and Ways

Isaiah 55:8-9

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

How do you grow spiritually? I am not talking about growing sideway, meaning gaining weight; but growing in faith, from inside out.  The spiritual growing process consists of 4 simple steps: 1) Hearing God, 2) Understand His call for your life, 3) obey, and 4) bear fruits. Today, we will focus on the second step – How to understand God’s will for your life? The basic of understanding God’s will is to know the ways how God acts. This is basic but important, so that we always think and do the right things for God, to pray correctly and be blessed. A matured Christian belong to Christ is the one when he does anything always asks himself: Is this God’s will? Am I doing it God’s way? The Bible in Isaiah 55 said – God’s ways and thoughts often are different from ours. The main reason is this – common men think common ways, but God is NOT a common man. We are sinners, and our mind is polluted with sins; so, our thinking and doing many times are crooked in compared to God’s standards and ways. In John 12 recorded an event when Lazarus family served a dinner in honoring of Jesus at Bethany, then unexpectedly Mary took about a pint of an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. But one of Jesus’ disciples, named Judas Iscariot, objected with his thought and said – “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” His common thought was motivated by the greed of money, and not knowing that this act of Mary was a pre-anointment for the day of Jesus’ burial, that was God’s way for a savior to die for our sins. In Matthew 16 recorded the time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. But then how did Peter response to that? “Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”  Then “Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Peter’s common thought was only focused on the human temporary needs, and not the way of God the Father had planned to save the whole world through the death of His Son.

God’s ways and thoughts are often more difficult than we normally think. As human, we tend to think of easy ways to provide the best comfort for our flesh, but that’s NOT always how God works. Our easy ways often cannot accomplish the “big” things for God. Was the way to the cross, at the hill of Golgotha easy for Jesus? He was beaten to near death, and shamefully nailed to the cross. It was a difficult way God acted to provide an easiest way for mankind to be saved. That’s why Paul said in 1 Corinthians 1:18 – “For the message of the cross (God’s difficult way) is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power (and wisdom) of God,”

Not just different and difficult, but the Bible said God’s ways and thoughts are higher than ours. Jesus’ vision is higher than ours, because it always focuses on the Whole Wide world. Jesus always focuses about the kingdom of God, about the eternity, and the souls of men, and not just the temporary things on this earth. In the occasion Jesus healed a paralyzed man, He said to the man – “Your sins are forgiven,” because “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” Jesus saw his soul in eternity, in the kingdom of God is more important, or “higher” than just physical healings. Jesus taught His disciples to pray of a higher plane: “This, then, is how you should pray – Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” God’s thoughts and ways through Jesus are higher than ours, because they are focused on the kingdom in heaven, and not just on earth; about salvation to all sinful men, women, and children. Because of these thoughts and ways, Jesus established the church and gave a commandment in Matthew 28:19-20 – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” The apostle Paul understood this “higher” thoughts and ways of God about the kingdom of heaven to all mankind, so that he spent the rest of his life to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the gentiles through 3 mission trips. As a result, the Gospel has been reached to all the world today.

This understanding is important so that we learn to think like God, and not as common man. This understanding is important so that we act liked God, and not our common ways. God’s thoughts and ways are so high that make our ways are so small. Have you experienced flying an air plane looking out the window at night? As the plane takes off, you start seeing houses and cars becoming liked little toys; then as the plane gets up higher and higher, these houses became just small dots. The more you think of God’s ways – “flying high,” the more your ways shrink. We must think higher liked God; so, we do not limit Him and His power with our miniature thoughts and ways. I believe that one of the main reasons the today churches are not successful, including VHBC is because we still think and do things our own ways, and not God’s ways. I often pray for all church leaders to have “big” visions for God, as God thinks and not as I or the church think. I often dream that VHBC one day will no longer be just for the Vietnamese, but an international church for all people – The Khmer, Spanish speaking people, black, Japanese, Laos… We limit God when we just want VHBC to be in our comfort circle of the Vietnamese people only. Please don’t misunderstand me; Vietnamese culture are precious, but Jesus came to this world not just died for the Americans, for the Vietnamese, but for all sinful men, women, and children. This thought may make you feel uncomfortable, but God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours. This understanding of God’s thoughts and ways will help us to think big for God, to think “outside the box,” and experience that “I (and we) can do all this through Him who gives me and you strength,” as said in Philippians 4:13. We must have a higher attitude of “can do” with the power of the Holy Spirit. Our God is big, powerful and strong; there is nothing impossible for Him.

“Be like Christ” and “think liked Jesus!” and accomplish great things for the Lord to bring His glory at the end. God’s thoughts and ways are in Jesus Christ, His Son, when Jesus proclaimed in John 14:6 – “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” God’s ways are illustrated in the life of Jesus and His teachings, simply because He is the Way, the truth, and the life. Practice “WWJD” (What Would Jesus Do) in everything to know God’s will for your life, and the way how you should act, or make all decisions in life. We must have a desire liked David – He often asked God to teach him the ways how God acts. In Psalms 25:4 David said “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.” In Psalms 85:11 David said again “Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. May His Spirit put in our heart the desire of seeking God’s thoughts and doing His ways always.

Ý Tưởng Và Đường Lối Chúa

(Êsai 55:8-9)

God’s Thoughts and Ways

(For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.)

I/Step Two

> How do you grow spiritually?

# I am not talking about growing sideway, meaning gaining weight; but growing in faith, from inside out.

> The sermon two weeks ago has helped us to know the spiritual growing process which consists of 4 simple steps:

1) Hearing God,

2) Understand His call for your life,

3) Obey, and

4) Bear fruits.

> Today, we will focus on the second step – How to understand God’s will for your life? (Hôm nay c/ta chú tâm học hỏi về bước thứ hai đó là thông hiểu ý Chúa cho đời sống mình.)

> The basic of understanding God’s will is to know the ways how God acts. (Muốn thông hiểu ý Chúa, điều căn bản c/ta phải hiểu đường lối của Chúa, cách Ngài hay hành động.)

> This is basic but important, so that we always think and do the right things for God, to pray correctly and be blessed.

> First, we must have the same mindset as Jesus Christ when He was on earth always sought to do the Father’s will, according to God’s way and timing, and not His own.

# John 8:28-29 – “Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man (put Jesus on the cross), then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” (Trong Giăng 8:28-29, Chúa Giê-su nói gì về chức vụ của mình? “Khi các ngươi treo Con người lên, bấy giờ sẽ biết ta là ai, và biết ta không tự mình làm điều gì, nhưng nói điều Cha ta đã dạy ta. 29 Đấng đã sai ta đến vẫn ở cùng ta, chẳng để ta ở một mình, vì ta hằng làm sự đẹp lòng Ngài.”)

> A matured Christian is the one when he does anything always asks himself: Is this God’s will? Am I doing it God’s way?

II/God’s Thoughts and Ways

1) The Bible in Isaiah 55 said – God’s ways and thoughts often are different from ours.

> The main reason is because common men think common ways, but God is NOT a common man.

> We are sinners, and our mind is polluted with sins; so, our thinking and doing often are crooked in compared to God’s standards and ways.

  1. a) In John 12 recorded an event when Lazarus family served a dinner in honoring of Jesus at Bethany, then unexpectedly Mary took about a pint of an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair.

> But one of Jesus’ disciples, named Judas Iscariot, objected with his thought and said – “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.”

> The Bible said he did not say this because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

> His common thought was motivated by the greed of money, and not knowing that this act of Mary was a pre-anointment for the day of Jesus’ burial, that was God’s way for a savior to die for our sins.

  1. b) In Matthew 16 recorded the time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

> But then how did Peter response to that? “Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

> Then “Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

> Peter’s common thought was only focused on the human temporary needs, and not the way of God the Father had planned to save the whole world through the death of His Son.

  1. c) In John 9, when Jesus’ disciples saw a man blind from birth, they asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

> Jesus answered – “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

> The common thought of man is that suffering is always a result of sins, but to God sometimes through suffering, God’s power can be displaced for His glory.

2) God’s ways and thoughts are often more difficult than we normally think.

> As human, we tend to think of easy ways to provide the best comfort for our flesh, but that’s NOT always how God works.

> Our easy ways often cannot accomplish the “big” things for God.

> From last week sermon, we learned that the way to the eternal life is a narrow gate, meaning “difficult,” and a few will find it.

> Was the way to the cross, at the hill of Golgotha easy for Jesus?

> He was beaten to near death, and shamefully nailed to the cross.

> It was a difficult way God acted to provide an easiest way for mankind to be saved.

> That’s why Paul said in 1 Corinthians 1:18 – “For the message of the cross (God’s difficult way) is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power (and wisdom) of God,” (Vì vậy mà sứ đồ Phaolô trong 1 Côrinhtô 1:18 có nói – “Bởi vì lời giảng về thập tự giá (Đường lối khó khăn của Chúa) thì những người hư mất cho là điên dại; song về phần chúng ta, là kẻ được cứu chuộc, thì cho là quyền phép (và sự khôn ngoan) của Đức Chúa Trời.”)

3) Not just different and difficult, but the Bible said God’s ways and thoughts are higher than ours.

> Jesus’ vision is higher than ours, because it always focuses on the Whole Wide world (WWW).

# I think the www. (World Wide Web) stole the idea from Jesus.

> Jesus always focuses about the kingdom of God, about the eternity, and the souls of men, and not just the temporary things on this earth.

3.a) In the occasion Jesus healed a paralyzed man, He said to the man – “Your sins are forgiven,” why? Because “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”

> Jesus saw his soul in eternity, in the kingdom of God is more important, or “higher” than just physical healings.

3.b) When Jesus saw a lost crowd, what did He tell His disciples to do in Matthew 9:35-38 – “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

3.c) Jesus taught His disciples to pray of a higher plane: “This, then, is how you should pray – Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

> God’s thoughts and ways through Jesus are higher than ours, because they are focused on the kingdom in heaven, and not just on earth; about salvation to all sinful men, women, and children.

3.d) Because of these thoughts and ways, Jesus established the church and gave a great commandment in Matthew 28:19-20 – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

> The apostle Paul understood this “higher” thoughts and ways of God about the kingdom of heaven to all mankind, so that he spent the rest of his life to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the gentiles through 3 mission trips; As a result, the Gospel has been reached to all over the world today.

> Couple weeks ago I have learned a lesson about this truth why helping Tuan Hong – the international student.

> It hit me suddenly after the service that he needs to attend LSU by the following Tuesday. How can I help? Where will he stay? Who is going to bring him to school?

> I talked to my wife, we both agreed to help Tuan.

> So I had to wake up every morning around 5:00 a.m. to have enough time to bring him to LSU.

> Going through a lot of difficult time to find a place for him to live: where can I start God? Where can I find a place for him? Apartment gate is closed, office is closed; Some are available, but you have to find your own roommates.

> I kept on praying and wondered – why is it so difficult Lord?

> I don’t know much about LSU, liked a stranger in a forest of students.

> Try to find an easiest way for him to live close to his uncle in Lake Charles and attend McNeese is a good college – It is a common sense?

> I called a contact there, but he didn’t reply.

> At the end, I contacted McNeese directly and filled out all the paper and forms required for Tuan to be transferred and even paid the tuition.

> As soon as we paid the fees and had an acceptance letter from McNeese, LSU changed its mind and said Tuan must attend here for at least one semester.

> Re-work with McNeese to get the money back, and return to the process of hunting a place for him.

> Through the help of Christian at the Chapel in campus, I found a LSU apartment for Tuan.

> I kept thinking to myself – God, why is it so difficult, my plan was not succesful? (Tôi lại thầm thắc mắc với Chúa, tại sao công việc đường lối của con làm không xuông xẻ, dễ dàng; Chúa biết con rất bận còn phải giảng dạy lời Chúa nữa mỗi Chúa Nhật.)

> But God speaking to me in my heart – You are about to preach a sermon about “My thoughts and ways are different and higher then yours, right? So, this is a real lesson for you.”

1) It seemed that God is speaking to me – Don’t you see that I love Tuan too; I care about his soul. I want to keep him here so you and VHBC can help him to know Me – because my thoughts and ways are not common as you think.

2) Don’t you see that I love Tuan’s roommate named Ali from Iran too, that you have an opportunity to share a gospel tract with him? Because My ways are higher than yours.

3) Don’t you see that I just open your eyes to see a harvest field of reaching out to the LSU students and refresh your vision of 35 years ago that you wanted to reach them.

4) Don’t you see that with the experience you have, I prepare you to better serve the next one to come and have opportunity to share my love with more students.

> I felt that I am liked Job in the old testament, could not say a word for these lessons and understand a little God’s thoughts and the way He acts.

III/ Think Like God

> This understanding is important so that we learn to think like God, and not as common man.

> This understanding is important so that we act liked God, and not our common ways.

> God’s thoughts and ways are so high that make our ways are so small.

# Have you experienced flying on an air plane looking out the window at night?

> As the plane takes off, you start seeing houses and cars becoming liked little toys; then as the plane gets up higher and higher, these houses and cars become just small dots.

> The more you think of God’s ways – “flying high,” the more your ways shrink.

 # I remember a beautiful song – “Turn your Eyes upon Jesus” then what happen? “And the things of this earth will grow dim.”

> We must think higher liked God; so, we do not limit Him and His power with our miniature thoughts and ways.

# I believe that one of the main reasons the today churches are not successful, including VHBC is because we still think and do things our own ways, and not God’s ways, not about His kingdom.

# I often pray for all church leaders to have “big” visions for God, as God thinks and not as I or the church think.

> I often dream that VHBC one day will no longer be just for the Vietnamese, but an international church for all people – The Khmer, Spanish speaking people, black, Japanese, Laos…

# We limit God when we just want VHBC to be in a comfortable circle of the Vietnamese people only.

> Please don’t misunderstand me; Vietnamese cultures are precious, but Jesus came to this world not just to die for the Americans, for the Vietnamese, but for all sinful men, women, and children.

> This thought may make you feel uncomfortable, because God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours. (Những điều này có thể làm cho quí vị cảm thấy khó chịu (more works to do), nhưng phải biết ý tưởng và đường lối của Chúa cao hơn của c/ta.)

(C/ta phải có một thái độ mới là c/ta có thể “làm được” mọi sự khó và lớn cho Chúa mình, bởi quyền năng của Thánh Linh ban cho.)

No one comes to the Father except through me.”

> God’s ways are illustrated in the life of Jesus and His teachings, simply because He is the Way, the truth, and the life. (Đường lối Chúa bày tỏ rõ qua chính đời sống và lời dạy dỗ của Chúa Giê-su, Con Ngài.)

# So, practice “WWJD” (What Would Jesus Do) in everything you do to know God’s will for your life, and the way how you should act, or make all decisions in life.

> We must have a desire liked David – He often asked God to teach him the ways how God acts. (Đavít ngày xưa luôn có tâm tình cầu xin Chúa dạy ông đường lối Ngài, để sống đẹp lòng Chúa.)

# In Psalms 25:4 David said “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.”

# In Psalms 85:11 David said again “Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

> May His Spirit put in our heart the desire of seeking God’s thougths and doing His ways always. Amen!
